Welcome to Tyneside Linux User Group

Tyneside Linux User Group is an informal, loose organisation of Linux users and advocates in the general Tyneside area. There is no formal membership, and all are welcome to our meetings, which are largely social in nature.

You may log in as guest (use a blank password). If you wish to have your own login, please email one of the LUG Co-ordinators. Email addresses can be found in the directory.

We have two mailing lists:

* The announce list is a low volume, read-only list where the LUG's coordinators can inform subscribers of meetings, events and important changes to our resources.
* The general list is where subscribers can discuss pretty much anything they like.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be in the The Discovery Museum on Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. It will begin at 12:00 (noon), to end two or three hours later, on Saturday 4th of September, 2010 which follows our regular pattern of the first Saturday each month.

You can find us either in the classroom on the ground floor, or the training suite on the first floor. We don't usually find out until we get there. We'll normally update this site as soon as we know, so if you have mobile internet you can find out here. Otherwise, ask a member of staff when you arrive!

Annual new year's eating

Instead of our regular January meeting, we're having a social meal at Frankie & Benny's Restaurant. This will be the third time we've done this. The last two were great successes.

Franky & Benny's New York Italian restaurant - the one on the corner of Northumberland Road and John Dobson Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

I'll need to know numbers as soon as possible. We've already got about six people who've said they'll come. Please, give us a shout on the general mailing list if you want to come, and I'll get us a table booked.

I'm working on a provisional date of Saturday the 9th of January, and a time of six o'clock in the evening. As before, this isn't a late night thing.

Happy Birthday to Linux

Linux 0.01 was released to a largely unsuspecting public on this day, 1991, making Linux 18 years old and legally able to buy beer. It had 10,239 lines of code at the time. It now has about 12 million.

New mobile web page launched

Tyneside Linux User Group now has a web site optimised for small screen mobile devices. There's nothing there but the latest news at the moment. Whether that changes depends on whether we feel we need more, but what's there is working right now!

Birthday present from Linux Format

Linux Format magazine are wishing us all the best for our birthday, and have sent us some magazines. We have a bunch of their OpenOffice.org special, which features loads of articles and tutorials on our favourite office suite. We also have a bunch of this year's February issue, which headlines a big article on virtualisation.

There are enough to go around, and I'll be bringing these to the meeting on the 4th. Anybody who wants one can have one. And then there will be cake!

These don't have the DVD with them, but we'll be making various distributions available at the meeting to anybody who wants them.

10th Birthday

The beginning of July marks ten years since the founding of Tyneside LUG. We'll be marking this with cake, at our next meeting. In fact, there is likely to be much cake.

Ten years! We're old!

Watch this space for further events. There might be an evening in a pub, or ten pin bowling. Join us on the general mailing list with suggestions!

Linux Format in PDF format

It's the KDE issue. This issue has good things to say about Tyneside LUG!

05 March 2009: This opportunity has now passed, although since it was distributed by bittorrent there might still be some seeds up and running.

Listen carefully, folks, because this is something you don't want to miss. In just a few hours - at midnight GMT/7pm EST tonight - we'll be putting online full high-res PDFs of Linux Format issue 116. That's the current, on-sale issue of the magazine. No DRM. No cost. No catches. You get everything.

But there is one small proviso: it will be online for only 24 hours. After one day has passed, we'll pull the link and you'll have missed your chance to grab it (legally at least!)

So: please tell your friends, tell your LUGs, tell your mailing lists, tell your Twitter/Identica contacts, tell your relatives, classmates, roommates, cellmates and anyone else who you come across, because we won't be repeating this offer!

Follow the link below for complete info.
